Historical Milestones :
Department of
Economics with Rural Development started functioning in 1985 with the
joining of two faculties and admission of students. It started offering
post graduate courses and research from
January 16, 1986 with adequate accent no the study of rural
development. To fit itself with
the changing needs of the society and the requirements of technological
development of the academic world with modified and modernized the
syllabi through induction of courses on computer programming,
decentralised planning and participatory rural development and
environmental economics. In 1999 the University Grants Commission
sanctioned the Department Special Assistance Programme ( SAP) and the
Departmental Research Support (DRS) level for the period from 1999 to
2004. A number of major research projects have been sanctioned by the
UGC and ICSSR in favour of faculty members of the department
New inclusion from emerging fields in curriculum:
The
department has included in its curriculum emerging issues in
decentralization, rural industrialisation environmental economics,
Topology, Dynamic Optimisation.
Research areas:
The teachers in the
department have divergent areas of research interest. The major research
areas include rural development, decentralized planning, quantitative
methodologies, econometric methodologies, human development, industry,
environmental and natural resource economics.

SPECIAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF FACULTY MEMBERS
Future plans: :
(i) Introduction of M.Phil. Courses, (ii)
Establishment of centre for rural development, (iii) Introduction of
certificate course in rural development, decentralized planning and
natural resource management.
Highlights:
(1)
Offering courses and
conducting researches on industrial organization, environmental
economics, decentralized planning and participatory development, rural
development, industrial economics and theoretical econometrics
(2)
One of the research
papers on theoretical econometrics has been published in
“Communications in Statistics: Simulation and Computation”.
(3)
A number of research
articles and books on microfinance, rural industrialization,
decentralized planning and participatory development, rural development,
industrial economics, environmental economics have been published by the
faculty members in refereed journals and by publishers of repute.
(4)
A good number of
scholars of the Department have been awarded Ph.D. degree.
(5)
Several major research
projects sanctioned by UGC and ICSSR are being conducted by the faculty
members.
(6)
Departmental Journal “Vidyasagar
University Journal of Economics” is regularly published.
(7)
All the students of
the Department are offered Dissertations at the final stage of their
Masters Examination.
(8)
Semester System
Examination has been introduced and the first batch of students under
this system has got their results published.
