Department of Human Physiology with Community Health:

Brief Description of the Department :

Heath was started in 1990 and it was a memorable event in this respect that Vidyasagar University was the second University in West Bengal, which started teaching in Human Physiology as basic science at postgraduate level. In beginning the name of the department was Human Physiology with Community Development. Latter name was changed to Human Physiology with Community Health. The department offers the postgraduate degree in Human Physiology. The main goals of the department:

I)To promote teaching human physiology with a special emphasis on different aspects of community health, e.g.



(a) Community Nutrition
(b) Environmental Health.
(c) Reproductive health.
(d) Mother and Child health.
(e) Family planning.
(f) Immunization.
(g) Occupational health.


II) To offer practical training, data analysis technique and field studies in different aspect of Human Physiology to the postgraduate students, so that they serve different sectors as a
(a) Community health consultant,
(b) Community health counselor,
(c) Nutritional expert,
(d) Biochemical expert,
(e) Microbial analyst,
(f) Environmental Physiologist / analyst,
(g) Industrial Physiologist,
(h) sports Physiologist

III) To train the students so that they conduct or operate the different National awareness Programme organized by Govt. agencies and non -Govt. agencies.

IV )It also aims to broaden research activities in basic as well as applied physiology with a greater interest for improving community health. Special events: Four special paper:

(a) Microbiology and Immunology
(b )Sports Physiology and Ergonomics
(c) Endocrinology, Reproductive Physiology and Family Welfare
(d) Neurophysiology Courses : M.Sc. Milestones:

1. The department has brought various research projects from different funding agencies.
2 .Constructed modern and sophisticated instrument laboratories.
3. Constructed a computer and network laboratory.
4. M. Sc. in Dietetics and Community Nutrition Management is developed for Distance education under the dept. of Human Physiology

(c) Endocrinology, Reproductive Physiology and Family Welfare
(d) Neurophysiology Courses : M.Sc.

 

Future Plan

    • Community Health work on Tribal Population
    • Opening of M.Sc in Molecular Immunology
    • Introduction of New Special Papers
    • Modernization of the syllabus.
    • Improvement of Laboratories
    • Co-ordinated Research on Community Health
    •  To intensify research which will be more related to the development of Rural Community Health
    • To arrange training program for the rural workers to improve need based technology especially for women
    • To arrange awareness program about the community health (especially for the immunization program and family planning) among the people in the selected rural areas.
    • To arrange training programme of humanization of industrial work for industrial personals (in collaboration with India society of Ergonomics).
    • To generate comprehensive data base for health status of the population (area wise).
    • To initiate collaborative work with the Industries and Reputed Research Institute.  

 

Highlights

 ·         DST – FIST sponsored laboratories.

·         Sanction of UGC Innovative Programme of Biomedical laboratory science and Management (currently converted in a separate department)

·         A MOU has been signed between NATIONAL CENTRE OF CELL     SCIENCE (NCCS), Pune, an Autonomous Institute of DBT, Government of India and Vidyasagar University, Midnapore for research development with the leading role played by this department

·         Presently the Department has received Rs. 10.00 lakhs of UGC Infrastructure Grant
