Dr. Sumana Sarkhel
Associate Professor
Biographical Sketch
Dr Sumana Sarkhel is an Associate Professor in Human Physiology at Vidyasagar University.She has been
teaching in the University for last 14 years. Prior to that she has served as a lecturer in
Department of Physiology, Army College of Dental Sciences, Secunderabad and
Department of Nutrition, J.D Birla College, Kolkata. Till date, she has guided more than 45M.Sc projects, 3 MPhil students, 7 Ph.D students of
which three have been awarded . Three of her scholars have been recruited as
epidemiologist at the block and district level. She has been a member of UG and PG Board of
studies in the University and also supervised syllabus revision. She has conducted workshops
under NSS and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan in the rural areas of Midnapore. She has prepared
comprehensive study modules for Distance Education of the University and conducted
classes(both online and offline).
Her future aspiration as a faculty will be to extend her research work in the areas with special
emphasis on structural and functional aspects of snake venom and its antagonists. Besides she
is interested in teaching various areas of biological sciences including Neurosciences,
Biophysics, Bioinstrumentation, System biology. She has also started a special paper course on
Biophysics and Structural Biology in her department. During the tenure of her service in
Vidyasagar University, she has conducted extensive field surveys and epidemiological studies
in Midnapore as will be evident from her publications. She has received several travel grants from CSIR and INSA . She has attended several national and international conferences. She has completed two projects from UGC
and DST-WB.
