Mr. SAYAN MANDAL
Assistant Professor ( On Contract )
Biographical Sketch
Sayan Mandal is a researcher in the field of fisheries science with specialization in fish biology and aquaculture. He completed his M.Sc. in Fisheries Science from Vidyasagar University in 2019 with a first-class, first position (gold medal). Recently he has submitted his Ph.D. thesis in fisheries science at Vidyasagar University and is awaiting the award of the degree. He previously completed his B.Sc. (M) in Industrial Fish and Fisheries from the University of Calcutta in 2017. Mr. Mandal qualified several national-level competitive examinations, including CSIR-UGC NET in Life Sciences, UGC NET in Environmental Science, and multiple GATE examinations in Life Sciences. He also qualified the ICAR AICE-JRF examination in aquaculture conducted by NTA. He has been awarded prestigious fellowships such as the DST INSPIRE Junior Research Fellowship and DST INSPIRE Senior Research Fellowship. In recognition of his academic excellence and research contributions, he has received several awards, including Young Scientist Awards at international conferences, a Junior Scientist Award from the Society of Fisheries and Life Sciences, Best Research Scholar Award in Fish Biology and Physiology, and a Junior Researcher Award from ICARSM-IASR. His research focuses on fish reproductive biology, aquaculture, aquatic biodiversity conservation, and environmental impacts on fisheries. He has published 16 research papers in peer-reviewed international journals, many of which are indexed in UGC-CARE and Scopus databases. In addition, he has contributed two book chapters on fish conservation and climate change impacts on fish reproduction. His research includes studies on fish reproductive biology, length–weight relationships, aquatic biodiversity, aquaponics, pesticide toxicity in fish, and impacts of natural disasters and pandemics on fisheries. In addition to research, he has also worked with the Wildlife Institute of India as a Ganga Prahari, contributing to aquatic biodiversity conservation and awareness programs. Furthermore, he served as Young Professional-II at ICAR–CIFRI, Barrackpore, and worked as Manager (Livestock) under the Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society, where he contributed to fisheries- and livestock-based livelihood development programs. Mr. Mandal is a life member of several professional organizations, including the Indian Science Congress and the International Academy of Science and Research. His academic and professional efforts are dedicated to sustainable aquaculture development, fish conservation, and improving fisheries-based livelihoods.
Academic Interest
My academic and research interests focus on fish biology and aquaculture. I am particularly interested in fish reproductive biology, breeding techniques, and conservation of indigenous fish species. My research also explores aquaculture technologies such as biofloc systems, and sustainable fish farming practices. In addition, I work on topics related to aquatic biodiversity conservation, environmental stress and the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activities on fisheries resources. My long-term goal is to contribute to sustainable fisheries development and the conservation of aquatic ecosystems.
